Writing is Fun! Children’s Writing Workshops
I love to talk with kids about reading and writing! Through the years, I’ve spoken to over 4,000 kids in public and private schools, homeschools, libraries, and bookstores…and I’d love to talk with your kids!
What a joy it is to see even the most hesitant child get excited about books! But that’s not all. During the program, children will learn the basics of writing a story, how to develop memorable characters, how and where to get great ideas, how to pack the story with exciting events, and the necessity of revision. By hearing about my experience of rejection and trying again, kids also lean a lesson in striving for a goal…and doing what it takes to reach that goal.
The basic class usually runs about 50 minutes, but can be reduced or extended to fit your needs.
Please contact me if you would like to discuss the possibility of having a Writing is Fun! workshop in your school, library, or bookstore.

Writer-in-Residence Programs
Tales of Virtue
Teachers and principals are always searching for ways to teach two things—writing and character education. I can help you with both! My program, Tales of Virtue, teaches writing skills while educating the student in six basic virtues: Caring, Citizenship, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Fairness and Respect. The program begins with stories that define and demonstrate the character traits we hope to instill. Throughout the week, students are taken through the steps of writing as they write their own stories of virtue. Students learn through Prewriting, First Draft, Rewriting, Editing, and Publishing that writing is an enjoyable and worthwhile endeavor. If you have spiral-binding capability, the class “publishes” a spiral-bound, illustrated book, Tales of Virtue. If such binding is not available, books will be stapled. The week ends with a “launch party”—including refreshments—where each student sits in the Author Chair and reads his or her work. They then autograph their page. Even reluctant writers get excited about working together and seeing their words in print!
