Parting Words From The WORD…

I few weeks ago I posted Carman’s Sunday’s on the Way video in Parting Words From The WORD. Believe it or not, I’ve been back to that post several times, just to watch the song again. It’s amazing how something so old and out of date can still bring chills and tears as I envision Jesus fighting the evil one at his own game of death.

And now here we are, two weeks later and it’s Good Friday, the Friday before the Resurrection Sunday Carman referred in the video. The day Jesus was betrayed, suffered, and died for you and me. But the good news is, the battle wasn’t over on Friday.

I want to share one more Carman song with you as we look toward the day Jesus overcame the grave and freed us from the consequences of sin forever. Yes, we were freed from the consequences, but those consequences of sin were still paid in the battle between good and evil. They were paid by The Champion.

The Lord will march out like a champion,
like a warrior he will stir up his zeal;
with a shout he will raise the battle cry
and will triumph over his enemies. Isaiah 42:13

This weekend as we celebrate Jesus’ death and resurrection, let’s remember that through his triumph over the grave, Jesus the Champion triumphed over his enemy–and ours–forever.

He is risen!

Interview & Book Give-Away with Gina Holmes

Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to my friend, Gina Holmes. Gina and I met way, way back in the day at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference, and I was drawn to her from the first moment! At that time, I don’t think either of us had anything published, but we were working hard at it.

She went on to write three best-sellers, and I’m honored to have her with us today. Be sure to check out her complete bio below. And if you want a chance to win a copy of her new book, Wings of Glass, just leave a comment and you’ll be in the drawing. Don’t forget to come back next week to see if you’re the winner!

But first, let’s start with this teaser:

From the best-selling author of Crossing Oceans comes her new book, Wings of Glass, a heartrending yet uplifting story of friendship and redemption. On the cusp of adulthood, eighteen-year-old Penny Carson is swept off her feet by a handsome farmhand with a confident swagger. Though Trent Taylor seems like Prince Charming and offers an escape from her one-stop-sign town, Penny’s happily-ever-after lasts no longer than their breakneck courtship. Before the ink even dries on their marriage certificate, he hits her for the first time. It isn’t the last, yet the bruises that can’t be seen are the most painful of all.

When Trent is injured in a welding accident and his paycheck stops, he has no choice but to finally allow Penny to take a job cleaning houses. Here she meets two women from very different worlds who will teach her to live and laugh again, and lend her their backbones just long enough for her to find her own.

Okay, I’m hooked–how about you? I mean, I read this and there’s NO WAY I’d be walking away from this book!

Now, let’s get started. Welcome to the Christian Writer’s Den, Gina!  Wings of Glass, has just released. Tell us a little about it.

I think this is my favorite book so far. Wings of Glass tells the story of Penny Taylor, a young wife who feels trapped and alone in a physically and emotionally abusive marriage. Besides her low self-esteem, she feels her Christian faith doesn’t allow for divorce. It’s not until she meets two women—one a southern socialite and the other a Sudanese cleaning woman—that her eyes are opened to the truth of her situation and she begins her journey to healing and redemption.

What made you take on the tough subject of domestic abuse?

As a little girl, I watched my mother being physically abused by her husband and then later, two of my sisters enter abusive relationship after abusive relationship and I thought that would never be me. . . until the day my boyfriend hit me for the first time and I began to make excuses for him. I know the mindset of someone who gets into and stays in an abusive relationship, because I’ve been there myself. It’s taken me years, and a lot of reading, praying, and talking to get to the heart of what brought me and kept me in toxic relationships and I want to pass on some of what I learned that helped me find boundaries and recovery from a codependent mindset and most of all healing.

What do you hope readers take away from this book?

It’s my hope and prayer that those who are in abusive relationships will begin to see that the problem lies with them as much as with the abuser. That’s something I railed against when friends suggested it. I wasn’t the one with the problem! I was no doormat who enabled abuse or addiction… or was I?

I also hope that those who have never understood the mindset of victims would better comprehend the intricacies of codependency and be better able to minister to these women and men. And of course I’d love it if young women would read this before they ever enter their first romantic relationship to have their eyes open to how abuse almost always progresses and be able to see the red flags early.

Which of the characters in the novel is most like you and why?

Each of the characters has a little of me in them or vice versa. I think years ago I was more like Penny, though tougher in many regards, at least I thought so. I’d like to think now I’m a little more Callie Mae. Because I’ve lived through what I have and have found healing, I can see in others the path that will lead to healing and the one that will lead to destruction. The difficult part once you’ve found healing is remembering that you can’t do it for others. You can offer advice, but you can’t make anyone take it. Each person has to learn in their own time, in their own way.

Who is your favorite character?

I absolutely love Fatimah. She had such a great sense of humor and didn’t care what anyone thought except those who really mattered. She was really quite self-actualized. She was so much fun to write and I actually find myself missing her presence.

What’s your favorite and least favorite part about being a writer?

Favorite: making my own schedule. I love when I’m feeling bad one day knowing that I don’t have to punch a clock. I can just take the day off and then work harder the next. Of course, there’s a lot of other things I love about writing, like allowing others to consider another point of view that may be far different from their own.

Least favorite: There’s a joke that when you work for yourself you at least get to pick which eighteen hours of the day you want. That’s true. Working from home means I’m always at work. I work from about 7:30 am until about eight at night most days. Under deadline, it’s worse. Truly understanding how much the success of a book rides on the shoulders of the author is a blessing and a curse. Because I get that no one is more invested in the success of my books than me, I put in a LOT of time on the publicity/marketing end of things. It’s tiring but an investment that I think pays off in the long run.

You had written four novels before your debut, Crossing Oceans was published. Do you think those books will ever get dusted off and reworked?

Never say never, but I doubt it. I had considered reworking some but having gone back and re-read them, I realized they weren’t published for good reason. They just didn’t work. Now, there is one story I’m resurrecting characters from for a story I should be writing next, but the plotline is completely different. I started out writing suspensel but as my reading tastes changed, so did my writing tastes. I don’t see myself doing suspense again any time soon.

You’re known for your quirky characters, what inspires you to write these types into each book?

Honestly, I’m a pretty quirky person. The older I get, the more I embrace those quirks. I think everyone is quirky really. As a student of human nature, I pick up on those and like to exaggerate them in my fiction. I also like to surround myself with quirky people. My husband is quirky, my kids are quirky and so are my friends. Often in life, especially when we’re young, we hate about ourselves what makes us different, when really those are the things we should be embracing. Different is interesting. Different is beautiful.

What advice would you have for writers hoping to follow in your footsteps?

My advice would be not to follow too closely in anyone’s footsteps. Yes, there is a certain path all writers find themselves on. There are certain things that we must all do like learning to write well, figuring out platform, going to writers conferences to meet the gatekeepers and figure out the way things have to be formatted and submitted and all that sort of thing. But it’s okay to veer off the path too and forge your own. There are those who have self-published who have found great success.

There are those who have written about subjects that they were told no one wanted to read about and found success. It’s smart to figure out what others have done before you to make them successful, but alter the formula to suit your needs and passions. It’s okay to be different, in fact, I think great success and maybe even happiness depends upon it. And by all means, read Novel Rocket.com and leave comments. It helps not only encourage those authors who have taken the time out of their day to teach us, but it also connects you to the writing community. Community is important.

Bio: Gina Holmes is the founder of Novel Rocket and a PR professional. Her bestselling novels Crossing Oceans and Dry as Rain were both Christy finalists and won various literary awards. Her latest novel, Wings of Glass, released February 2013 and has earned a starred review from Library Journal, a Romantic Times Top Pick and a Southern Indie Bookseller’s Okra Pick. She holds degrees in science and nursing and currently resides with her family in southern Virginia. She works too hard, laughs too loud, and longs to see others heal from their past and discover their God-given purpose. To learn more about her, visit

Vonda here: Thanks for being with us today, Gina! I know everyone is ready to read your new book!

And readers, don’t forget to leave a comment and you could win a book! And if you just have to have her books now, you can click on any of her book covers or titles to order and have them in just a few days!

Parting Words From The WORD…

Last night Gary and I attended a fundraiser for a crisis pregnancy center. The night was filled with pictures of beautiful newborn babies, testimonies of spiritual healing after abortion, and a live ultrasound of a 12-weeks gestation baby…with hands and feet and a beating heart.

Babies are aborted legally at 12-weeks gestation everyday across America.

As I watched that precious unborn baby kick and roll and jump around in his mother’s womb, I was reminded of a verse in Proverbs 31. No, it’s not about the Proverbs 31 Woman, although I’m confident a

3 Points to Consider If You’re Considering Self-Publishing & Who Won Sharon Elliott’s Book?

Let’s be honest here. Back in the old days, self-publishing carried a stigma among writers. Self-publishing was for those who couldn’t get a traditional publishing contract. Self-publishing was a last resort.

But that’s no longer the case. Done well, self-publishing is now a respected route to holding your book in your hand. But it’s not for everyone in every situation. If you’re considering self-publishing, here are some points to consider.

Parting Words From The WORD…

On February 14, Carman Licciardello, better known as Carman of Carman Ministries, posted devastating news on his Facebook page. He announced that he has incurable multiple myeloma and has an estimated 3-4 years to live.

My heart sank as I read his post. Carman doesn’t know me, but I know him. God used his songs to teach me who Jesus is and what He did for me.

This is the first Carman song I ever heard…and suddenly the battle between good and evil, the war against the powers of darkness, was real.

That was some time in the mid-80s and it still gives me chills today. Carman’s songs helped develop a desire to learn more about God and His Word, which eventually led to my speaking and writing ministry. And it all began with Carman’s songs.

Carman has had a music ministry for many years, and even now, in the midst of this diagnosis, he isn’t putting ministry aside. His Facebook post included: “I want you all to know that I will continue to minister and win souls until I can’t do it any longer…Now let’s get back to business, we have to work while it’s day, for soon the night comes.”

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Romans 10:17

Carman will use his gifts and the time he has left to share the message of Christ…and others will come to faith.

Will we? Will we use our gifts to write the words, sing the songs, draw the pictures, and speak the truth that will lead others to faith in the only Savior, Jesus Christ? Will we faithfully use the time we have left?

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Interview & Book Give-Away with Author & Speaker Sharon Norris Elliott

(Okay, I know it’s not the 4th Tuesday, my usual Author Interview Day, but it turns out that I’m heading out of town and needed to get my post up before I left, and since Sharon’s interview was ready to go, I decided to introduce y’all to her early. And you’re in for a treat!)

My AWSA (Advanced Writer & Speaker Association) friend, Sharon Norris Elliott, calls herself the “20-year Overnight Success.” Why? Because that’s how her writing journey feels. Having been in the business of Christian writing for 22 years, she’s finally hitting her stride. What a joy to share her journey–and her NEW book–with you! Be sure to read her bio below, but here I’ll just let you know she’s an author, speaker, Bible teacher, writing instructor, and so much more!

Want the chance to win her book? Just leave a comment and you’ll be in the drawing. Don’t forget to check back next Tuesday to see if you won! 🙂

Now, here’s a peak into her story:

Q: Sharon, how did your writing journey begin?

A: I have enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember. In elementary school, I wrote poems, songs, and little stories. I also loved books. My mom joined a mail order book delivery service in my name and every month, I received a new Dr. Seuss book. It was wonderful. I had my own “library” in my bedroom.

Q: So you have known all of your life that you wanted to write books, right?

A: No, quite the contrary. Although I continued writing musicals, composing praise songs, and writing Bible studies, blending the two loves – writing and books – didn’t come together in my mind until just before I attended my first Christian writers’ conference.

Q: How did that final blending of your loves happen?

A: At that conference, I attended workshops that inspired me to put my words in the hands of others. By the end of the conference, I felt God strike me with the amazing idea that I was a writer. When I came home and excitedly started telling my friends of my epiphany, they wondered how I didn’t already know that.

Q: So you believe God has called you to be a writer?

A: Absolutely. But not just a writer, He has called me to be an author. I’m not just writing things down; I’m writing what He leads me to write so others can read it and live significantly in a closer relationship with the Him.

Q: If it’s God’s Word that makes the difference, why not have people just read the Bible?

A: That’s a great question. Gods’ Word is definitely enough. The amazing thing is that God allows us authors to partner with Him in spreading His Word. In the same way as pastors preach the Gospel, Christian authors preach through the books we write.

Q: And what kind of “preaching” do you do?

A: I write non-fiction books. My books are based on lists that I see in the Bible, or on passages of Scripture, all with a view to helping my readers apply the principles of the Word into their lives. My tenth book will be out soon.

Q: What is your latest book?

A: Power Suit: The Armor of God Fit for the Feminine Frame is my latest book and it’s published by New Hope Publishers. The premise of Power Suit is that we trying to fit the armor of God over some other pretty unsavory “outfits.” Until we take off some old habits and attitudes, our armor won’t fit. And armor that doesn’t fit doesn’t work.

Q: I love that concept and LOVED that book! Anything new on the horizon?

A: There’s always something new coming! My second parenting book is due out in Fall 2013 from Judson Press. Boomerangs to Arrows: A Godly Guide to Launching Young Adult Children gives a Christian answer to parents who are wondering how to help their grown kids become independent adults who are supporting themselves and living on their own.

Q: What is your advice to writers who want to become published authors?

A: My six-step plan to get new writers started up the road to publishing success is as follows: First, pray. Be sure writing is something God is calling you to do. Second, have a message. The first thing a writer needs is a message someone wants to hear. Third, hone your craft. Words, sentences, spelling, syntax, etc: these are a writer’s tools. Know how to use them well. Write beautifully. Fourth, invest in your writing. Go to Christian writers’ conferences. Learn the business side of Christian publishing. Start learning what it will take to market yourself and your message. Fifth, be patient. Remember, I am a 20-year, overnight success. Getting going in this business usually takes a fair amount of time. Finally, get started. Write every day.

Bio: “Live significantly!” That’s the inspiring message of Sharon Norris Elliott, award-winning author, speaker, and astute Bible teacher, who always encourages everyone who will listen to live a life that matters. Her two latest published books are Power Suit, the Armor of God Fit for the Feminine Frame, and Raising Boys to be like Jesus. Discover more at her ministry website, She also authors a daily devotion on her blog: and serves as editor-in-chief of Gospel Roads magazine (). Being dedicated to instructing Christian authors and encouraging them toward excellence in the business, she teaches at major Christian writers’ conferences nationwide, and is CEO of AuthorizeMe through which she conducts hands-on seminars personally assisting attendees toward their publishing goals.

Thank you for joining us today, Sharon. I know the CWD gang has enjoyed your interview as much as I have! And readers, remember, you could win a copy of Sharon’s latest book, Power Suit, the Armor of God Fit for the Feminine Frame, by simply leaving a comment. Check back next week to see if you won!

Parting Words From The WORD…

In a recent worship service, as I was singing Blessed Assurance, God took the opportunity to have a pow-wow with me.

At first I was surprised at how much I was enjoying singing the old hymn. After all, I’m a contemporary-Christian, praise and worship kind of girl.

Some hymns are special to me, but most of them don’t reach me the way the newer songs do as I sing to the Father and His Son.

But this time, as I harmonized the words, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine…” My heart soared at the reality of their meaning. It IS such a blessing to know beyond a doubt that Jesus is mine, and to know that the divine glory I will experience will outshine any blessing here on earth.

“This is my story…” I belted out from deep within. What a story I have to share because of Him!

“This is my song…”

“Praising my Savior…” Oh, how I love to worship and praise the One who suffered and died for me. The perfect One who took on my sin and gave me His robes of righteousness!

“All the day lon–…” GULP.

The words stuck in my throat and penetrated my heart. Praising my Savior…all the day long? The whole day?

I bowed my head. I couldn’t sing those words, because they weren’t true. When was the last time I had truly praised my Savior all day long? Tears fell as He reminded me that not only had I NOT praised Him all day, but recently there had even been days when I hadn’t praised Him…at all.

Not a single time. How could I sing that song with a clear conscience?

Instead of singing, I was moved to confess:

My busyness.

My distraction.

My oneness with the world.

And then God spoke His words of comfort to my heart…

“Perfect submission. All is at rest.” His cleansing washed over me and suddenly I knew! I–in my Savior–AM happy and blest!

At last I could join Mrs. Crosby and my brothers and sisters in singing, “Filled with His goodness, lost in His love…”

I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:4

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Vonda
