Interview & Book Give-Away with Yvonne Ortega, and Who Won Kathy Carlton Willis’ Book?

Yvonne Ortega headshotWelcome to the Christian Writer’s Den 5th Tuesday as we welcome author and speaker, Yvonne Ortega!

Yvonne and I go way back to 2005 or so when we first met through the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (AWSA). In 2011 she attended the NCompass Writing Retreats that Edie Melson and I were leading at the time (before life got so crazy that we had to discontinue it). Then in 2012, she attended Christian Communicators Conference. During that time, she was cranking out books and blog posts, while also providing counseling in many areas of need.

Since then, God has continued to use her in powerful ways to reach those who need to hear the Good News of the love, grace, and mercy of our Lord. She has gone on to get even more training and as you’ll see, is now training others! But one of the things I love the most about Yvonne is her often-stated goal, “To reach millions for Jesus in my lifetime.” Wow. Can you see why I’m excited about sharing her latest book with you?

Be sure to leave a comment for Yvonne and you’ll be in the drawing for a free copy of her latest book, Moving from Broken to Beautiful: 9 Life Lessons to Help You Move Forward.

So let’s get started! Welcome, Yvonne. First of all, I’d like you to tell my friends a little about yourself.

I’m a small-town gal who enjoys the beach and music—everything from country western to classical music. Mention travel, and I’ll pack my bags right away. I watch comedies and laugh until my sides hurt.

As I’ve already mentioned, you’re a professional speaker and an author. How did you get interested in this line of work and ministry?

As a child, I gathered the neighborhood kids to play school. I was the teacher. Mama took me to the library weekly until I could go on my own. I would get lost in a book and forget to eat if it weren’t for Mama’s dinnertime call. I liked the smell and feel of paper and composition books and wrote stories. At thirteen, I submitted my first letter to the editor of the local newspaper.

After a diagnosis of breast cancer fourteen and a half years ago, I cried out to God through journaling. After lots of rewrites, I wrote my first book, Finding Hope for Your Journey through Breast Cancer. I had to speak in order to market and publicize the book.

That led me to speaker training, and now I’m a World Class Certified Speaking Coach.

What led you to write your second book?

Prior to breast cancer, I had gone through a domestic violence marriage, divorce, and single parenting. After breast cancer, I had four car accidents in seven years. None were my fault, but I suffered injuries and damage to my car. Six years ago, my only child unexpectedly passed away following surgery. Each crisis forced me to my knees in prayer and to the Bible for answers. God showered me with his love, Yvonne Ortega book cover 2compassion, and faithfulness.

After the divorce, I became a Licensed Professional Counselor and became involved in Women’s Ministry. I met many hurting women who didn’t know they could move from broken to beautiful with God’s help. That’s how my latest book, Moving from Broken to Beautiful: 9 Life Lessons to Help You Move Forward, came about. Passion drives me to share the message of these life lessons with women worldwide. Hurting people don’t need to give up. They can move forward and lead a productive, joyful life beyond measure.

What words of wisdom do you have for women who want to write about their painful past?

  • Make sure you’re ready to write about your painful past without an emotional, physical, or spiritual collapse. Take your time to heal. Ask God to show you when you can tackle the trauma of your past. He will show you.
  • Have you forgiven those who hurt you? God says in 1 Peter 3:9, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult.” I struggled to forgive my ex-husband. With God’s help, I’m no longer a prisoner of the past. Your readers want to know you aren’t either.
  • Acknowledge your pain and loss and admit you still grieve. I lost my mother before Mother’s Day and my only child three days after in the same year. Their birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Mother’s Day trigger the pain. They’re in heaven, but I can’t call or visit them and can’t send them a card or a gift. They can’t call or visit me, or send me a card or gift either. That hurts.
  • If you present yourself as Wonder Woman, your readers can’t identify with you. And you can’t minister to them. Acknowledge both your strengths and weaknesses.
  • In writing about your painful past, you answer a divine call. You minister to those you write and speak for. Your writing cannot be therapeutic journaling. There is a place for therapeutic journaling, but not for publication. For publication, include application, application, and more application. Have Scriptures, prayers, resources, links, quotations, etc. for the readers. Answer the question, “What’s in it for them?”

Your advice is right on target! Where can readers find your book?

Moving from Broken to Beautiful is available as a paperback and an ebook on Amazon and other online booksellers.

Do you have another book in progress?

I’m thrilled to say I’m halfway through writing a book on forgiveness.

Awesome, Yvonne! I didn’t know that! Thank you for joining us today. I pray God continues to bless you as you bless others.

And readers, don’t forget to leave a comment for Yvonne and you’ll be in the Random.org drawing for a free book. Be sure to return next week to see if you’re the winner.

Parting Words From The WORD…The Mind of Christ

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Let’s be honest . . .

As writers and speakers, it’s easy for it to be about us, about our successes, or lack of. It’s about acceptances and rejections, Followers and Friends, events, books, and sales.

But as followers of Christ, we must take on the mind of Christ. And in order to have the mind of Christ, we must become servants. We must take off the royal robes  and put on the slaves’ rags.

People need to see Jesus in action, and if we’re willing to serve, they’ll be able to see Him . . . in us.

What can we do in our writing lives to be the hands and feet . . . in order to share the heart and mind of Christ?

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature of God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Interview & Book Give-Away with Kathy Carlton Willis and Who Won Edie Melson’s Book?

Kathy Carlton Willis ImageIt’s a joy to introduce my friend, Kathy Carlton Willis, to you!

Kathy and I have been friends for many years and have seen many changes in the writing world. But one thing remains constant: The secret to getting your work published is to write well! And that’s exactly what Kathy did with her latest book, Grin with Grace. What a joy to share this new book with you!

Leave a comment for Kathy and you’ll be in the drawing for a free copy of Grin with Grace! Be sure to check back next week to see if you’re the winner. Now, let’s get started!

Welcome, Kathy! Let’s begin by letting you tell my friends a little bit about yourself.

I’m a flawed pastor’s wife on the search for grace. I’ve discovered a lot about God, others and myself along the way. I dote on my Boston Terrier, Jazzy, and love to find the humor in any given situation—even the trials. I’ve laughed. A lot. Grace (and Jazzy) have a lot to do with the ability to grin even when I’d rather groan or grit my teeth.

Will you share how you began your speaking and writing ministry?

I guess we can blame my profusion of words on my Mom. She says I pretty much came out of the womb talking, and soon after she helped me discover our public library. I’ve always been a words girl and started writing when I started writing—and haven’t looked back!

How did you come up with Grin with Grace?

All through my husband’s time in church ministry—over thirty years now—I’ve learned the importance of grinning with grace. So often, when I felt backed into a corner by a not-so-well-meaning church member, I found a way to bite my tongue: I told myself to grin with grace. It became my go-to phrase.

To organize the book, I searched for the word grace in Scripture and combined the results into different categories. I discovered how God blesses us with His grace, and the ways grace impacts our relationships with Him and others. Since life is more bearable with laughter, humorous transparency is woven into the fabric of this study. Hence—Grin with Grace.

I know from my own experience that God often qualifies us as authors by allowing us to gain life experience before we write on the topic. What happened to prepare you for writing Grin with Grace?

While writing this series, I dealt with multiple health issues, surgeries, cancer, and hospitalizations. At the same time, I moved to a different town and dove in to a new church ministry with my husband. Very little in life seemed familiar or comfortable. But God infused grace into each challenge and turned them into opportunities.

What will readers discover in Grin with Grace?Grin-With-Grace_cover

Grace isn’t meant to be hoarded. Once God blesses us with grace, we are then recruited to be instruments of His grace to others. Grin with Grace tells stories of real-life grace and gives suggestions for creating new grace moments for others. Learn how to become a Grace agent.

What are some of the events you have planned to go along with your Grin with Grace book? Event planners are welcome to contact me to find out more about these programs: Grace Gal Pal’s Night Out, Grin with Grace Banquet, Tea or Brunch, and the Grin with Grace Retreat.

Do you have any advice for beginning writers?

If you’re serious about obtaining the writing goals God’s given you, then you have to act like the CEO of your own company and do the work of writing. If you treat it as a hobbyist, you will get hobby-like results. But when you treat it like a business, the industry will take you seriously. Take the time to do it right the first time rather than getting in a hurry. Ask yourself: “Am I in love with the idea of being a writer, or am I in love with actually writing?”

(Vonda here: Kathy didn’t tell you, so I will. Kathy also has a writers group she coaches called WordGirls. It’s a group customized to the needs of the members, and involves a variety of services: webinars, private Facebook discussion group, one-on-one coaching, critiques, weekend getaways, downloadable tutorials, monthly newsletter and more. Their next event is in Kentucky later in October. Contact Kathy if you’d like to hear more about WordGirls.)

Where can readers find your book?

Grin with Grace is published by AMG Publishing and can be found or requested anywhere books are sold.

So what’s on the horizon? Do you have another book in progress?

The next book in the Grin With…Bible Study Series is Grin with Joy. It’s set to release around March, 2016. I also have a book for speakers that released this year titled Speaker to Speaker: The Essential Speaker’s Companion.

Thank you for being with us today, Kathy. You gave us all a lot to think about and work on.

And friends, don’t forget to leave a comment for Kathy and you’ll be in the drawing for a free copy of her book!

Parting Words From The WORD…There’s No Sinners Anonymous Program

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

I am a sinner.

No 12-Step or Sinners Anonymous Program can change that fact.

Guess what. You’re a sinner, too.

And yet we invest countless hours and waste sleepless nights trying to hide it. Why?

Oh, if only we would be transparent like Paul, who said in Romans 7 (and I paraphrase), “I don’t know why I do the things I do. I don’t do what I know I should do and I do what I know I shouldn’t!”

Or that we would be broken like David when he said in Psalm 51:8-9, “Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me—now let me rejoice. Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt.”

My pastor, Larry Scott, once said, “We’re either broken and sinful and admit it. Or we’re broken and sinful and hide it.”

Which will we be today?

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Parting Words From The WORD…The More I Seek You

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

It’s Thursday night as I write this. My heart is so full. Tonight I had the joy of leading a precious sister to the love, grace, and mercy of our Lord. Her entire life has been one of abuse from those who should have cared for her. But tonight she knows the Truth of the Gospel. She’s clean, her past is gone, and she finally knows that she’s loved, simply for who she is.

I got home and couldn’t wait to get to my office so I could worship and praise Him alone. Just the two of us. And now I invite you to have your own time with Him.

After all, the more we seek Him, the more we find Him; and the more we find Him, the more we love Him. I pray that you’ll take the time today to seek, find, and love Him.

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Writer’s Headlines: Kudos & MoGo7000 Totals and Who Won Nan Jones’ Book?

newspapersIt’s our 2nd Tuesday, and time for announcements that celebrate YOU! Let’s start with your kudos…

The following Christian Writer’s Den friends have been hard at work, following His lead, and charting new territory for Him.

1.  Tracey Garrell (NC): Through God’s grace, He equipped me to share a personal story of faith with others. Details can be found on There, under the Parent tab, right side are several testimonial videos (two are with me). In addition, God provided the opportunity to share on Focus on the Family’s radio broadcast, to be aired on September 25th. As a simple house wife and mother, the Lord receives all the praise and glory because He uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways. Christ calls us to submit to Him, live by faith and trust Him with the results. Praise God for His grace and faithfulness. May many other families be encouraged by this ministry as we seek to live authentic Christian lives in our communities and public schools. (Vonda here: Please check out this new opportunity and pass it along to others in your circle of influence. What a powerful movement this could be across America and beyond!)

2.  Kristi Woods (OK): “Tested, Not Arrested,” my story about a burly Honolulu police officer
and my lactose intolerance, is being published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Dreams and Premonitions, releasing this month. (Vonda here: Wow, now that sounds like a story I have to read! Great use of a hook.)

3.  Cheryl Barker (KS): I recently signed a contract with BroadStreet Publishing for my mother-of-the-bride book. The title and release date are still tentative, but it will probably come out next summer. (Vonda here: Oh, Cheryl, how well I remember the first time I heard your description of this book. I loved the idea from the first moment! But as I had to do with my first book, you had to wait several years to find the right publisher and see your dream come to fruition. Your example of continuing to write and submit–leading to gobs of writing credits–is a good lesson for all writers!)

Congratulations, CWD friends! You’ve shown what can happen when we don’t give up! And friends, if you didn’t see your name on the Kudos list, be sure to check back next week when I’ll have a new list of writing opportunities–AND a new give-away! But my sending them to you won’t do any good if you don’t follow through. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear of YOUR successes!

Parting Words From The WORD…The New Me

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

About ten years ago, my granddaughter, Ellie, and I were passing the time on a family road trip by playing one of our favorite travel games, I Spy. It was Ellie’s turn and she had me searching high and low for something purple, our favorite color.

It wasn’t the beach towel, the flower on her shirt, or her purple nail polish. I had a good view of the entire van from my back seat location, but it wasn’t helping. What else could it possibly be?

“You’ll never guess this one,” the seven-year-old announced. That was all I needed to hear. As I was being transported down the highway at 70 miles per hour, my competitive streak went into overdrive.

But there was nothing purple left in the car. “Are you sure you mean purple?” I asked, eyeing Christina’s sweater. “Could it be pink?”

“No, MaMa, it’s purple. I promise.” She crossed her arms. “You might as well give up. You’ll never guess it.”

“You know me better than that.” I crossed my own arms. “I never give up!”

Five minutes later, I gave up. “Okay, what is it?”

She pointed. I leaned over and scanned the floorboard. “There’s nothing purple down there.”

“Not there,” she said, pointing again. “There.”

I followed her pointing finger straight to my leg. My spider-veined leg.

Purple is no longer my favorite color.

This story is true, and one I love telling as I travel around the country. But even though I laugh every time I tell it, I must admit, there’s a little part of me that misses my former self. Maybe I need a new me.

I occasionally catch a makeover show claiming to create A New Me. The recipient of the makeover gift is usually thrilled with her New You results. She sports a new haircut and a new wardrobe and new lips. But regardless of how good this “new” person looks, underneath the surgery and the make up and the packaging, she’s still the same person, with the same baggage, the same struggles, and the same sin.

I’m thankful that when God created A New Vonda, He made me new inside and out. No make-up, no surgery, no fake body parts. He made me fresh and new, clean and white, forgiven and free. Truly a make-over gift.

And that’s why I write and speak. I know what it’s like to be spiritually wrinkled, walking around on spider-veined legs. I know how it feels to be covered in guilt…and I know how it feels to be free.

I can’t keep the Good News of this free gift to myself.

I have to speak.

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3:15b (NIV)

Grace and peace,

Vonda

How to Tell Your Amazing Life Story and Call-Outs for Kudos & MoGo7000

Courtesy of FreeDigitalPhoto.net

Courtesy of FreeDigitalPhoto.net

“I’ve had a hard life,” Eager New Writer says. “It’s an amazing story. All my friends say I need to write a book. I know it would be an encouragement to everybody who reads it.”

Just a few short years ago, I’d dread hearing those words because I knew the writer was most likely headed for a huge disappointment. Back then, publishers weren’t buying any personal stories or memoirs unless the author was a celebrity or already had a huge following.

Thankfully, that’s not the case these days. Please understand that doesn’t mean editors are rushing to buy every memoir and life story they can find, but at least now they may take a look at it.

It’s absolutely clear that personal stories can be powerful. They can touch hearts and make people think. They can even change lives. But they can still be a hard sell.

Does that mean Eager New Writer’s experiences don’t count or that Christian publishers don’t care about what she’s been through? No. It just means that even though Christian publishers want to point readers to Christ, they must make a profit in order to do so. And in many cases of personal stories, they just aren’t able to sell enough of those books to make a profit.

So what’s a writer to do? What if you do have an amazing story that would be an encouragement to others, but you’re unable to find a publisher who is willing to take a risk? The good news is, you have options.

But before we look at these other options, please, please, please make sure your book is professionally edited and truly ready for publication. Poorly-written books won’t sell, regardless of the route you go. So if your book has been repeatedly rejected by publishers, first make sure the rejection is because of a financial decision by the publisher, not because the book is poorly written.

Once you know the lack of publication isn’t based on the quality of the writing, then consider these other options.

1.  Self publish your book. If your primary goal is to document your story for your family and friends, self-publishing is definitely a viable option. Whether you choose print on demand (POD) or regular press technique, self publishing can create a lasting document of your story, allowing you to leave your message for those who come behind you.

Are you a speaker who frequently addresses large audiences? Self publishing might also be a good choice if you’re associated with a large organization that has a built-in audience and the means for delivering your message. And even if you don’t address large audiences, if you simply want to make your story available to those who hear you speak, self-publishing may be the way to go.Be creative computer Pixabay

But if you decide to go the self-publishing route, you must choose your publisher carefully. There are great publishers out there who produce high quality books that look as good–and sometimes better–than many traditionally published books. But there are also publishers who create sloppy products that label your book unprofessional. And in general, self-published books have a harder time getting distribution in brick-and-mortar bookstores.

So do your research! Don’t take anything at face value. A wise writer will search the internet for warnings or complaints, will have all contracts evaluated by someone knowledgeable about literary contracts, and will personally contact authors who’ve published with the house. Don’t go through the publisher or ask for references–that may not give you a true picture. Instead, find the names of authors, visit their websites, and contact them directly, preferably long after publication. There are many sites that report warnings about publishers. One is located here and has links to many more warnings.

Self-publishing can be a wonderful way to get your story out, but you have to choose wisely and be sure you know you’re dealing with a reputable company. Here’s a post by Eddie Jones, acquisitions editor of Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, as he shares his Top Ten Mistakes Every Author Needs to Know Before Clicking “Self-Publish.”

2.  Create an eBook. This is the route many self-publishers are going these days. For one reason, it’s much cheaper. For another, it’s much easier to do completely on your own. I’m not personally knowledgeable about e-Books and haven’t had any personal experience with it…yet. I do plan to use that route sometime in the future.

So here’s a post I found online that should be helpful for the steps of actually creating the eBook: How to Create an Ebook From Start to Finish (+18 Ebook Templates), by Anum Hussain.

bitsy3bookphoto3.  Fictionalize your story. Did you know you could create a novel drawing from the emotion, lessons, and scenes you experienced in your struggle? You can use fiction writing techniques to create compelling characters who travel your journey. Readers often connect with well-written fictional characters as easily as–and sometimes better than–they connect with real people. It’s all in the writing and delivery of the story. And a well-written novel that taps into your experiences and emotion has a much better chance of publication than the actual story of your life.

Although my Bitsy books aren’t based on horrible experiences of life, I do use a lot of real life events in my children’s mysteries. Many of the scenes, conflicts, and emotions Bitsy and her friends and family go through are taken directly from my own life. But please understand, if you translate your experiences for fiction, you don’t have to stick to the truth.

As I tell students when I teach writer’s workshops in schools, take your story or event and make it bigger, badder, meaner, and sadder. Make it funnier, happier, and scarier. Take clips from your entire life and compact them into a short time span. The lessons are still there, the testimony can still affect others, but rather than presented as truth, it’s delivered through the vehicle of fiction. And sometimes that’s the vehicle that increases your chance of publication and allows you to share your lessons of life with others.

So there’s the bad news and the good news about publishing the story of your life. Whether traditionally or self-published, Ebook or hard copy, written as real life or fiction, our stories can make a difference in the lives of others.
