Parting Words From The WORD…

I recently had another heart-to-heart conversation sharing the plan of salvation with a family member. No matter how many different ways I tried to explain it, my lost relative couldn’t accept the basic tenant–the “A” in the ABCs–of salvation:

Admit.

Admit that you’re a sinner. Admit that you need a savior.

My family member repeatedly told me how good he was. He bragged that he talked to “the man upstairs” and God were “tight.”

The concept of guilt was beyond him. He’s good, so he sees no need for a savior.

And yet the Apostle Paul, writer of much of the New Testament, the man who experienced a personal encounter with God on the road to Damascus, the missionary who fulfilled the Great Commission to go and teach…THAT Paul said:

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15 (NIV)

But praise God, the message of salvation doesn’t end there. Paul also penned these words, given to him by the Holy Spirit:

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)

Yes, the words that condemn us in 1 Timothy 1:15 are the very words that free us in Romans 8:1-2: The acknowledgement that we are sinners, sinners who need a Savior in order to be set free from the law of sin and death.

And it’s free to you and me.

Yes, it’s an amazing grace.

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Vonda

Parting Words From The WORD…

Yesterday I had the joy of being in Cherokee, NC for a work opportunity. During my time there, I was able to tour the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, where I discovered how little I know of Cherokee history.

My heart was broken as I read what these Native Americans had endured in the name of progress and civilization. By the time I left late last night, I knew I had to research my own Cherokee heritage and learn more about my ancestors.

Who Are The Characters in YOUR LIfe?

(I know many of you recognize this photo. I used it just last week in my Christian Communicators Blog post, The New Me. I hated to reuse the photo so soon, but when I decided to revisit this blog post from 2010, I knew I HAD to run this same photo again! I hope you don’t mind.)

The more I teach at writer’s conferences, the more I realize how blessed we are as writers if we have home-grown, ready-made characters in our families. You know what I’m talking about…the eccentric grandpa who buys moonshine along with the eggs, the prim and proper aunt with the colorful past, the entrepreneurial dad with the can-do attitude and the can’t-do bank account. Yes, I am blessed as a writer.

Parting Words From The WORD…

As most of you probably know, I had the joy of spending almost two weeks in Alaska last month, and what a special time that was! Everywhere we turned, we stood in awe of our Creator God. From wildlife to mountains and lakes to glaciers, we were reminded that life begins and ends with an all-powerful God. Even the glaciers have their own live creatures–iceworms who spend their entire lives inside the glaciers!

What a mighty God we serve!

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” Jeremiah 32:17 (NIV)

This week as you’re going through the ups and downs of life, remember the words of Jeremiah.

Nothing is too hard for Him. Nothing.

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Five Fatal Flaws of Fiction

Editors used to have time to hold hands with new writers, to take them under their wings and guide them through the steps of good writing. That is no longer the case. Thanks to mergers and downsizing, such luxuries have been eliminated. Your work must grab the editors quickly—and most of them say you have to do it in the first page!

Once when I was teaching at a writers conference, an editor at Writer’s Digest Books said from the stage, “I hate to admit it, but I’m not looking for a reason to buy your book, I’m looking for reasons to reject it.”
