Parting Words From The WORD…We ARE Somebodies

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. James 3:13 NIV

When I read this verse, it immediately took me back to a conversation at a Christian Communicators Conference where the topic was wisdom. Could be kind of a heady topic, wouldn’t you say? Especially for those who write, teach, and speak The Word.

Left to our own devices and convictions, it would be easy to think more highly of ourselves than we should. After all, people sometimes look up to us as writers and speakers, as if we were smarter or had something they couldn’t have.

As if we’re somebody.

Yes, I know that God gifts each of us differently and it’s up to us to use those gifts for His glory, but we have to remember that the gift of wisdom has nothing to do with us.

We are somebodies. We’re sinners, saved by grace based on nothing we’ve done or deserve.

So who is wise and understanding among us? If God has called us, gifted us, endowed us with the ability to write and speak about Him and teach His Word, it’s our responsibility to live a “good life” (God-honoring life) and continually offer good deeds done in the humility of our position: A sinner saved by grace.

That is the true evidence of any wisdom we may or may not have.

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Parting Words From The WORD…Majesty, Majesty

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

Laughing Jesus by Robert Wilson, Sr.

I have the joy of being at the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove in Asheville again this week. I can’t believe it, but this is our 6th Christian Communicators Conference and when we include our two Advanced conferences, this make our 8th! My goodness, how time has flown!

It’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown by. I often wonder how different my life might be if I had continued fighting with God, never submitting to His plan for a new, unique speaker’s training conference. I’m thankful He stuck with me. It’s been an exciting, scary, life-changing journey for me and for others.

But the more I consider what God has done, the more I realize what a small part I am of it. I have nothing to offer but my flawed, sinful self. If there is any gifting or talent, it came from Him. If there is any good in me, it is Him. On my own, I’m weak and empty-handed. I have nothing to offer. But praise Him, He loves me anyway.

As usually happens, the weeks leading up to the conference have been crazy. Simply too much to do and not enough time to do it. I have to admit that when I walked into the service Sunday morning, my mind wasn’t ready. Instead of calming my spirit and going straight to that place of worship, my heart and mind continued to work on my mental and written To-Do list.

But within minutes, the truth of the words on the screen cut through my fog of too much stuff and spoke to my fretful heart.

Majesty.

Soon my mind was quieted, my heart was at peace, and I was moved to real worship, acknowledging how great He is and how small I am. I may be empty-handed, but in His hand, I’m alive.

Written by Martin Smith and Stuart Garrard, this song says it all. It ministered to me again today as I wrote this post. I hope it touches you as well.

Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great;
you are clothed with splendor and majesty.
Psalm 104:1

I pray God’s blessing on the work of your hands and your hearts,

Who Won Cyn Rogalski’s Writer’s Blocks?

Wow, what fun to read your additions to Jolene Philo’s Top 10 Things About Being a Writer! We writers certainly have lots of things to love when it comes to writing. I must say some of my personal favorites about being a writer are 1)working in my PJs; 2) living in a world where I can make anything happen; and 3)doing and saying things to people I would NEVER do or say in real life! I know you have no idea what I’m talking about!

All the entries were excellent, but since my sweet hubby, Gary, doesn’t know any of you, I asked him to choose a winner. And he proclaims that the winner is…Judith Robl!

Congratulations, Judith! Please contact me with your mailing address and Cyn will get your blocks right out to you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I think that does it for another Writer’s Headlines week. Please be sure to let us know when you find success!
And, as always, thank you for joining me, dear friends. It’s a joy and an honor to share the writing life with you.
Write on!
Writer’s Headlines: A Brand New Call for Submissions, Conferences & Contests
It’s time for Thursday’s Writer’s Headlines…
And that means great opportunities for you! This week’s Writer’s Headlines include a brand new, time sensitive call for submissions, a list of writers conferences, and some writing contests that could bring you some money to help you GO to writers conferences!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Edie Melson is Looking for True Stories of Abuse

Friends, Family, and Foes: Learning How to Recognize and Stop the Cycle of Domestic Violence—Call for Submissions By Edie Melson

In 2001 my best friend and her daughter were murdered…by her husband. I had spent hours in close proximity with this family and never knew they were victims of domestic violence. That tragedy, along with the things that followed, dramatically shaped my life. I’ve made it one of my life’s missions to warn others about the signs of domestic violence I missed and help them put an end to the cycle of domestic violence so common in our world today.

This book is under contract with Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. We are now accepting submissions of your either your true-life experience with domestic violence or how you dealt with a friend’s experience of domestic violence.

Access the full call to submission for Edie Melson’s writers guidelines for Friends, Family, and Foes here, or find them at Edie Melson’s website. But you must hurry–the deadline is May 31, 2012.
