“Prose” and Cons

What a joy to share the wisdom of Dr. Reverend Alton Gansky with you today. (If you don’t know the joke behind this title, you’ll just have to come to the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference and find out for yourself!)

Al is the director of Blue Ridge, author of over 40 books, and all around good guy. I think you should listen to what he has to say. You’ll be glad you did!

“Prose” and Cons

By Alton Gansky

Great writers are pros with prose.

This comes more easily for some than others. Some of us have to work at making our prose clear, concise, and engaging. For some it seems to come easy. I say, “seems” because a little probing proves that uncluttered writing is difficult, even for the best of writers.

Parting Words From The WORD…

While I’m away, I’m going to share a couple of videos that touch my heart. The first time I heard this song, I had to just play it over and over, taking in the truth of the words. Perhaps they’ve spoken to you, too.

I hope you’ll listen carefully and be encouraged by the words as Matthew West sings his new song, “Hello, My Name Is.”

There’s power in the name of Jesus!

Pet Peeves and Grace

Hello, friends! Greetings from Alaska. Today’s guest blog post comes from Carol Barnier. You may recall another post she shared with us a while back: She Never Had a Rejection? It generated a lot of comments and I think you’ll find this one equally thought-provoking.

Pet Peeves and Grace

If you’ve been in a writer’s support group for any length of time, you’ve certainly seen it before. It’s an evergreen discussion that makes a pass every year or so. When a professional association has covered all the topics they can think of—Saying No to a Mentor Request, Keeping Social Media from Eating Your Time, How to Have a Book Signing that Doesn’t Look as Though it Occurred Post-Rapture, there eventually comes a lull in which no one can think of a fresh and original topic to pose to the group.

I’m in Alaska for a few weeks, but don’t worry, I have a great line-up of guest posts for you!

Some of you know that Edie Melson and I met at the 2001 Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference as unpublished writers, and now she’s the co-director of that conference! How’s that for evidence of how hard work pays off? Be sure to read Edie’s bio below, but let me just say here, she is well-respected and well-known in the writing world.

This article is a reprint of Part One of an eight-part series on freelance writing, originally posted on Edie’s popular blog, The Write Conversation. At the end of this post, be sure to follow the link to Edie’s blog, scroll down and you’ll find links to ALL EIGHT POSTS! Hoo-wee!

Parting Words From The WORD…

There’s a lot of conflict in this world. Country against country. Man against man. Brother against sister. Parent against child.

Maybe today you’re having a conflict of your own. Maybe you have more questions than answers right now about what you’re supposed to do in a situation with your mate, your children, your job, or your ministry.

Hardships, struggles, misunderstandings, and differences will always be with us.

Yes, we will always be a world of conflict, but I’m thankful we serve a God of peace.

A Contest You Won’t Want to Miss & Who Won Dianne Neal Matthews’ Book?

Here’s a fun contest, especially for writers! My friend, Donna Welch Earnhardt, is running a contest for her new picture book, Being Frank. The book has gotten great reviews. Here’s what Publishers Weekly had to say about Being Frank:

“Newcomer Earnhardt makes her point with solid pacing and lots of laughs. . . . Italian illustrator Castellani’s digital artwork is crisp, colorful, and energetic. . . . While Frank might not persuade sharp-tongued children to mend their ways, the story provides a useful array of good ways to deliver bad news.” —Publishers Weekly (September 17, 2012)

As you can see, Frank is a young boy who believes honesty is the best policy…but he knows nothing about tact and kindness. Have you ever had anyone like that in your life?

Now you have the opportunity to write about your own experience with a Frankly Frank and have a chance to win a free book in the process! Simply visit Donna’s blog post, leave a comment telling of a time you were too honest for your own good or someone was too honest with you, and you’ll be in the drawing. Share the blog and contest with others and you’ll get TWO entries! (I’m going to be in Alaska at the time of the drawing, so I’ve asked her not to include my name.)

So what are you waiting for? Think of a time when being frankly frank might not have been the best way to handle things, then head on over to Donna’s blog and leave a comment, telling the story. You could be the winner!

And remember, the Bible says “…gracious words are a honeycomb.” Proverbs 16:24.

And Who Won Dianne Neal Matthews’ Book?

The winner is Cheryl Barker! Congratulations, Cheryl.

Now, just Contact Me with your snail mail address and the book will be right out to you!

And readers, I know you all want your own copy of Dianne’s book, A 365 Day Journey from Genesis to Revelation, you can get yours here!

Thank you, Dianne Neal Matthews, for joining us and sharing your insightful devotional book with us! Blessings on all your projects!

And blessings to you, dear reader. Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Vonda
